Deadpan Hollywood

A soggy, entertaining and dirt-covered journal from the trenches of independent film production in Hollywood. Me, well, you might've seen my name on screen in some movies. I'm not improvised. This is the real, above-the-line reality.

Dealmaking It

Back and forth, back and forth. Negotiations are always tough when both parties want something specific that’s right square in the middle of both parties’ interest. If you add to that the fact the the other “party” negotiator is a very smart and savvy but also very Russian producer, then you are going to in-communication central. Man is it tough sometimes to make people understand that there are points that are IN an agreement already that don’t need further rehashing. It kind of frustrates me. You know, in the agreement, you want a blue chair. Fine, here’s your blue chair. Agreement sent. Now, he means navy blue. Fine, here’s the navy blue. Agreement re-sent. No, but I mean I want navy blue and not teal. Well, we never mentioned teal but will include the contingency. No teal, only navy blue. Agreement re-amended. Re sent. You know, navy blue, no teal and specifically we have to agree on the definition of navy blue. Well, Navy blue, it’s a color. There’s only one way of saying, NAVY BLUE. Yes, but we want to define it. Why? Because we want to make sure it’s Navy Blue and not teal. We already included that it’s not teal. It’s navy blue, we totally agree with that, you will get it. Yes, thank you, but we have to make sure Navy blue is no other kind of blue and specifically not teal. Fine we’ll put in the agreement that YOU will have final say in the blue of the chair. You will have approval, ok? Fine, but let’s ON TOP OF THAT, define Navy blue…

Etcetera, ad nauseam.

That, with specific points and percentages, has been the wrangling we’ve been going through with one of the agreements we’re negotiating with a producer who’s entering into our project by bringing us a European financier. That’s kept us busy for 2 days.

Because, you know, Navy Blue, is Navy Blue.
